I'm Nearly Done with Hawaii Five-0
It makes me sad to say it but I'm about one episode away from quitting H50. I've felt this way most of this season and last night's episode didn't help.

All the things that made me watch H50 are gone - the feeling of ohana, the Steve/Danny bromance, the fun. I really like Danny but if Scott Caan doesn't want to be in the show, he needs to just quit and stop being there half time. Fish or cut bait already.

I'm also annoyed by the lack follow-through with previous episodes. I know the show is episodic in nature but it still maintains story arcs. But Steve was tortured and drugged by Wo Fat and we never saw any repercussions. Shouldn't he have been in the hospital for the next episode? How hard would it have been to see Danny coming to collect him from the hospital and taking him home?

I can maintain a willing suspension of disbelief with the best of them. But really, show? How about at least acknowledging all the things that they've been through?

Also, the crime element in last night's episode was too gross for me. I fast forwarded through most of that plot line. Why do they have to have guest stars at all? That's not why I watch the show, to see a random ATF woman seek revenge and find closure.

I'm 95% fed up with the show. And may give up on it entirely very soon. Which makes me very sad.

I haven't watched an episode "live" since before Christmas. I thought that would upset me more than it has but I just haven't cared. And lately I've been hoping that it doesn't get picked up for a 6th season.

As for the lack of Scott, I think its great the show is giving him time to spend with his family, but they need to do a better job of writing his absences and editing his scenes if he films separately from the rest of the cast.

I don't watch on Friday night any longer. I record them and watch them Saturday morning. That way I can fast-forward through the endless commercials and the parts of the show in which I have no interest, which seems to be about 1/3 of the content at this point.

It is good of the show to accommodate Scott's desire to do other things but there are actors who would be thrilled for a full time gig in Hawaii. Scott should have never signed on if he wasn't willing to do what it takes to maintain character continuity. It's a disservice to the show and a disservice to the viewers who got hooked on the Steve/Danny chemistry which is now non-existent.

Makes me sad.

It's one of the shows that is sitting on the bubble between getting another season and being cancelled. I wouldn't be surprised if it does get cancelled.

They seem to be working as hard as they can to alienate even their most loyal viewers, of which I used to be one. I don't mind the extra characters (like Lou and Jerry). But having them on doesn't distract us from the fact that Scott has chosen to be a part-time actor in the show that brought him real fame.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was cancelled either. Sad, sad, sad.

In regards to Scott Caan, perhaps the show is trying to help SC keep his show contract fulfilled while also letting him have outside projects?

It does feel as though there are hardly any McDanno scenes anymore--I guess the show is changing directions.

It is always disappointing when a once beloved show starts letting you down. *HUGS*

I understand that the show is working to accommodate Scott's other interests. But it's a disservice to the viewers. He signed on to be the co-star of a show in Hawaii. That means he should be in Hawaii to film every episode (or almost every episode).

There are no McDanno scenes any longer because there is barely any Danno. And that's by his choice.

I'll get over being disappointed. It's not the first show I've quit because it took a wrong turn.

I stopped watching at the beginning of Series 3... still love the fic, but can't stand to watch the show.

Yeah, you made the right decision to bail when you did. As much as I love Alex O'Loughlin (and I do!) it's simply not the same without Danny.

I've been watching off/on since about season 3 and never in real time. I actually haven't watched it since Christmas. Weirdly enough, though, I've had a renewed interest in writing H50. I've written 3 stories in the last two months and am working on a fourth. I hope there are still fic readers out there. Lol!

Some of the fanfiction is way better than the show! The stories are the way it should be, not the way it is. I still plan to write fic for it but I may not be watching it much longer.

Oh well. Not the first show that's disappointed me.

I am with the same as a lot of people here. I lost love for the show with it's here and gone again team members. the lack of the team I love and Danny. I feel Grover is going to take his spot - dad, transplant etc. And I like him, but I won't watch

however. I find love in fanfic

I don't blame them for bringing in Grover. I think he's supposed to fill the hole left by Danny's absences. It's Scott Caan's choice to be part time, which is such a disservice to the show. Why should I be more invested in it than he is?

Ah well. I won't stop writing fic for it. At least in my stories, it works out the way it's supposed to.

I like the characters. I like the show. I just wish that they weren't trying to force a romance on the characters with new characters that aren't really likeable (*cough*Amber*cough*Noshimura*cough*Catherine*). By doing that they are effectivly cutting out time for the normal bromance scenes which drew in most of the fans and keep us coming back. I think if they stopped trying to force romances on us then they would be better able to write the characters in ways we loved in season 1, and maybe they would remember to bring back consequences from actions taken in other episodes. I always wondered why nothing happened after they took down Frank Salvo in season 1. Supposedly he was a major bad guy. None of his "family" came to get revenge on his orders? Really?
Are 6 dogs too many?tkeylasunset on February 21st, 2015 09:46 pm (UTC)
I think the romances and new characters are an effort by the show to fill the hole left when Scott Caan chooses to be away from Hawaii. I don't think he's been pushed out in anyway. I think he's chosen to be part time so they had to do something to fill the empty spaces where he should be.

Yeah, the lack of consequences is really annoying. Well, it's not the only annoying thing but it is one that bugs me.

I'll survive quitting H50. I've left other shows and lived to tell the story!
dreamwind83: Five-0 Teamdreamwind83 on February 21st, 2015 10:03 pm (UTC)
Ah. That does make everything be a bit more rational. Still, I think they could fill it with something better than some half-assed romance. If they want romance they should at least make it believable.

But the lack of consequences is the biggest problem the Show has. they set up some good ending of an episode for a follow-up episode that drags out some PTSD for characters, or forcing them to deal with some highly illadvised (illegal) actions. But then nothing happens. Makes me want to smack my head on a table in frustration.

I think i could quite H50 the show, but I would stay in the fandom. The fandom writers are better than the Shows writers it seems anymore.

Seems like a bit of a chicken and egg issue or possibly a vicious circle to me. Is Danno being deemphasised as a character because Scott isn't arround for all filming, or is Scott doing other things because his character keeps being relegated to a replacable sidekick?

The rise of Gary Stu Steve started, imo at least in Season 2, as did the first of the unneccassary extra characters (Lori). And while fans have rightly complained about her and Cath seeming to be stand ins for Kono, ust like Grover, their involvement was always cutting into Danny's role on the team.

Speaking of Kono, the two occasions where she had a reduced visibility on the show (with I think both having been rumored to be actress related) there was a subplot/character storyline dealing with her entire absence. Same with Steve when Alex had to be absent for a huge chunk of Season 2. Other projects or a new baby for the actor are not a good reason for the character to be shorted.

If the only thing I missed about Danno was screen time, I could blame Caan, but when I miss his competence, his ability to bring out the best in the others and his partnership with Steve, I can't cut the writers and producers any slack.
Are 6 dogs too many?tkeylasunset on February 22nd, 2015 02:35 pm (UTC)
I totally see your point about chicken-egg dilemma. Maybe Scott did decide to cut down his time because Danny was being relegated to a more minor character.

I know shows have to evolve but H50 can't seem to stay in a rhythm. I started watching Castle last season and caught up with all the seasons that had already aired. They've been steady the entire time, with almost the exact same cast. It doesn't feel old or stale. Is that what H50 is worried about? Because all we ever really wanted was Steve and Danny being adorable while Chin and Kono were being equally awesome.

Ah well. Ultimately, it's just a show. Not sure it's worth the amount of time I'm investing in it.

I've been watching but not enjoying this season as much as previous ones. It's the lack of Danno and the Steve and Danno moments that I'm really missing too! The feel of the show has changed.

I have been enjoying Grover and do like the scenes with Grover and Steve but they're not Steve and Danno scenes at all!

I'm going to keep watching since even though I haven't loved the episodes I still enjoy H50 and think this is one show that I'm going to see through to the end.
Are 6 dogs too many?tkeylasunset on February 22nd, 2015 02:37 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Steve/Danno is practically non-existent. The very reason we all got hooked has been effectively erased. I don't mind Grover at all but like you said, he's not Danno.

Several people have predicted that H50 will be cancelled at the end of this season. The way they are going, I wouldn't be surprised. So I'll probably watch through, hoping against hope that it redeems itself.

Lovely hearing from you! And warmest of hugs!!!
