Please help!!!!!
No matter what I do, I cannot get this word problem to work:

You bought a ring for $3015.60. This includes sales tax at a rate of 7.7%. How much did the ring cost?

Please show your work.

OMG - I am on the verge of a meltdown over this ONE PROBLEM!!!!

1.077x=3015.60

I think. Hope that helps!

Re: Thank you!!!!
You're welcome! I'm glad I was able to help. Math sucks :(

3015.60 X 7.7% = 232.20

3015.60 - 232.20 = 2783.40 (Amount X Percent = Tax. Subtract Tax from amount = base amount.)

Think I got that right. That was how it was explained to me back in high school anyway... and I won't say how long ago that was.

that's what I kept getting too. But 2783.40 x 7.7% = $214.32. $2783.4 + 214.32 = 2997.72. That's how I knew I wasn't doing it right.

However, scraplove's works. 3015.6/1.077 = 2800. 2800 x 7.7% = 215.6. 2800 + 215.6 = 3015.6!!!

as you know, scraplove is right. The reason is that 3015.60 already includes the 7.7% tax.

3015.60 is the price of the ring (100% of the real price), plus what ever percent the tax is (in this case 7.7%), i.e. 3015.60 is 107.7% the price of the actual ring.

You can't calculate 7.7% of 107.7% and expect to get the same answer as if you calculated 7.7% of the 100% price.

And now I have a notecard with scraplove's formula on it!!!!! I may survive after all!!!

Thanks to one and all. You have no idea how much it means to me that you helped!!!

The way I worked it out was this:

X=the original amount of the ring
Sales tax = 7.7% x the original amount of the ring

So, the equation for the problem would be:

X + 0.077X=$3015.60
1.077X=$3015.60
X=$2800.00

Like scraplove said. Just thought I would show where the 1.077 would come from. Hope that didn't confuse anything.

That makes perfect sense. I kept trying to do it that way but I forgot to make it .077 so when I added it to 1, well, the results just weren't pretty.

Thanks so much!!!

I know this won't help, but as you have the answers already from other sources, I say the ring cost $3015.60! That's what you bloody-well paid for it! ha!

It's a temptation, believe me. I hate math so much. I'm sure that's one reason it's so hard for me. I'm so resistant to it!!!

And BTW I don't CARE how long the railroad bridge is!!!! Do I look like a railroad engineer to you? No I do not.

Thanks again!!!
