It's Something We All Can Do
4thoffive made an interesting post about the current lack of Hawaii Five-0 fanfiction. Lots of interesting points were made about the decline in fanfiction. I know that when I write a story and get almost no feedback, my muses suffer. We don't write purely for acknowledgment but it sure goes a long way in encouraging us to write the next story or chapter or even Woman's Day post!

And in what I have to admit to as full disclosure, I love getting comments. I am the worst at leaving them. I know how this sounds, I promise! But I'm a natural introvert who is convinced no one will care about what I think. "Just get over being shy," I've heard. Well, that's a little like asking me to get over having brown hair.

So here is my challenge to myself:

I will comment on every story I read, every post which speaks to me.

Will you join me?

I'm not suggesting we leave a novel length comment on every story or every post. "Hey - that was great!" can make someone's day! "You really rocked that pic spam" may make the difference between someone making (and posting) another one and fleeing the internet forever.

If you read the entire chapter/story, there must have been a reason! Tell the author! "Love your description of the clouds in chapter 4." Don't lie. But don't bash either. We can all find something we enjoyed or we wouldn't have kept with it! One sentence. Four words. That's not so much to ask in response to an author who has spent weeks or even months researching, writing, revising, perfecting their story. Obviously, if you want to gush over a story, no writer is going to mind, I promise!

And you know what a bonus to this may be? You'll make new friends! Yep - rock solid guarantee! Almost all of my LJ friends came from their response to my posts or my response to theirs. (Maybe you aren't looking for new LJ friends and that's cool. But you never know when you'll find someone who gets you in a way you never expected!)

What do you say? Will you take the pledge? Will you join me in spreading the Fandom Love?

(And because I love a poll, I've made one here for the Fandom Love Challenge.)

I am going to try so much harder to comment on the fics now too. I mean thinking about it, it's logical that people like comments and appreciation, and it's selfish to just take and take (in the form of reading) and to not even say a simple thanks..

Yay!!!

"Thank you" is a perfect comment to leave if you aren't sure what else to say!

Thank you!!!

This was my very resolution for 2012 - and it's been relatively successful. I read and comment constantly, for those stories that 'touch' me in some way. And I encourage everyone to do the same!

Yay you!! We'll try to follow your example!

Thank you!!

I, too, will take up the pledge. Thanks for this awesome post!

Thank you!!! I know that the more I do it, the easier it will get!!!

I think this is a good idea and I'm going to try to do that more often.

You always do a great job!! I need to model my behavior closer to yours!!!

Thank you, BB!!

I will join you... with a slight amendment. If the story is good. If I do not run away screaming THEN I will leave a review.

As someone who actively runs a kink meme I make it my business to reply to every fill there... even the ones that make me feel queasy. Outside of that Meme only stories that I can understand and enjoy (even if it's only a little bit.) will get my review.

Re:
By understand I mean if the story is like 'My Immortal' I will not be leaving a review. I will however actively seek out brain bleach.

I've been trying to leave comments on fics and graphics and will continue to do it.

You are so right that just a few words means so much.

((hugs))

I'm dreadful at feedback, and I tend to be pretty insular in fandom itself. I don't venture far or wide. For both of those reasons, I don't ever really expect feedback ... but that doesn't mean I shouldn't give it myself.

I totally understand!! I too am dreadful at leaving it as much as I love getting it!

Thank you for the comment!!

I'm a feedback whore myself. Just about as soon as I've posted a story I start hitting refresh to see if it's got any comments.

I do endevour to comment on all fics I've read and enjoyed. But really good idea to boost that idea for the lurkers. It is quite interesting watching your site stats and seeing you're had, sometimes hundreds of hits and you've had 10 comments if you were lucky! It isn't hard to just say, "hey, I liked it."

Thanks in advance. :-)

Just about as soon as I've posted a story I start hitting refresh to see if it's got any comments. Oh lord - I do that too. So glad it's not just me!!!

I love hearing from you, always. Yes - "hey - this was awesome" can be enough!!

Thank you!!!

This is an incredible idea, and I'm going to be sharing it wherever I can, because this is an attitude that could benefit everybody.

not in the Hawaii Five-O fandom but I tend to agree with your post. That is one of the reasons I am a fan of AO3, the kudos allows people to "like" a story without actually making a comment. As a K/S person, the archives get a lot of traffic and correspondingly a lot of comments. I guess a well run archive for your fandom does make a huge difference so I would agree with previous posts, if you all get a running start, the energy is amazing.
Are 6 dogs too many?: redhearttkeylasunset on November 9th, 2012 02:36 am (UTC)
I hope it spreads far and wide! Hawaii Five-0 is my most active fandom right now. I'm a Star Trek girl from way back, as you may know.

I think the K/S archives do help. It's also a huge fandom! Being the honorary grandparent of slash fandom!!

I also like the 'kudos' option. Not everyone is going to comment but kudos make it so easy to say "Good job!"

Thank you for your note!

You've got a really good point about encouraging writers. I'm really terrible about commenting because I never feel like I have anything to say. I'll try to get better about at least telling people, "Thanks for the cool fic!" though. Is there a support group for happily-lurking introverts? ;>

I love this idea. I am going to try and be better at leaving feedback. I am terrible at it.

You have been absent. I've missed you!

Hope all is well. And thank you for the comment!!

As a former complete "lurker" (in other fandoms), I can say that I discovered a special kind of joy when I began (shyly at first) commenting on the stories I liked. I often feel that I've nothing interesting to say, or I can't get my thoughts in order... but I usually try anyway. It's great to be able to discuss with a writer you admire, after all!
I'll remember what you said earlier, about the stories we don't like that much but read anyway, and the fact that if we did, there's a reason and we should thank the author. You're right, and I'll try to comment on those too, now!
Thanks for posting this!
Are 6 dogs too many?: redhearttkeylasunset on November 9th, 2012 02:40 am (UTC)
You make a great point!! Leaving comments opens a door to communicate with an author you already know you enjoy reading!

Thank you for your wonderful comment! It's a great reminder to us all!

i've only started reading Five-0 fanfics in the past 3 to 4 months, but i do make an effort to comments on fics that i like. letting authors know their works are well appreciated is the least we readers can do, right? while i don't write much, it's a good feeling to know what i've written is at least being read and more so when it's entertaining to others. hopefully others feel similarly.
Are 6 dogs too many?: redhearttkeylasunset on November 9th, 2012 02:43 am (UTC)
Thank you on behalf of everyone for whom you've left comments!! Muses love feedback!!

I am a Star Trek girl from way back and I wasn't very good about leaving comments then either. H50 is a much much smaller fandom so there are far fewer writes and fewer readers!

Thank you again!!

(Love your icon, BTW. Danno is taking a picture of Steve, isn't he? ;-)

I know that shiny new fandoms come along every day! It's the nature of our lives. In it's our house, it's the "oh look a chicken" syndrome! Some thing!

I understand about RL!! Why must we be adults and, like, act all responsible and stuff? Can't we just write, read, and comment on fanfiction for a living? Srsly?

Thank you for taking the time to comment! I think Fandom Love applies to any fandom!! So go forth and love!!!
