In Which Hawaii Five-0 is like Ice Cream
I have intentionally stopped reading fan reviews and/or reactions to each episode of Hawaii Five-0. The snarling, the criticisms, the character-hate is more than I can stand. Nor can I understand it.

Watching Hawaii Five-0 is like eating ice cream! Sure, there are some flavors I like better than others. But that doesn't mean the flavors I don't like are inherently bad or evil. My favorite ice cream is black cherry. Maybe you don't enjoy it as much. That's fine. You can skip that flavor. But don't tell me I'm wrong because your favorite flavor is The Only True Flavor.

I've never met an ice cream cone I didn't enjoy. Some I like more. Some I like less. But there is no bad ice cream. At least not in my experience.

Some episodes of Hawaii Five-0 work better than others. That's true with every show. If you don't like "the flavor of the week" there's always next week. And maybe there are nuts in your ice cream when you prefer it without. That doesn't mean you can't eat the ice cream. Just ignore the nuts and enjoy the rest!

Ultimately it's just a TV show. With as much nutritional content as ice cream. So what's with all the upsetment?

Now I want ice cream. Thanks :p
P.s. there are flavors of ice cream that people don't like? This I can not believe. Show me stats!!

Back when people first started going to gyms, I joined one (yeah, I'm a lemming.) But every time I finished, I had to go directly to the ice cream parlor for ice cream. Counterproductive much???

PS - I know right??? Blasphemers!!

Hi, Tekeyla : )

I like your ice cream analogy, and I agree with it with one exception. I HATE coffee ice cream. It's the only flavor that I cannot abide. LOL!!! My favorite flavor is a toss-up between Mayfield chocolate marshmallow, Breyer's white mint chip, and Ben and Jerry's Half Baked (vanilla and chocolate ice cream with pieces of cookie dough and brownie batter mixed in).

Regarding H50, as I told Powrhug, I still LOVE the series and the H50 folks on my f-list, but I'm officially over this fandom. I'm also less of a Steve/Danny shipper than I was 2 seasons ago. The fandom hate has driven those impulses right out of me, and I ignore most S/D posts nowadays. This fandom is (and frankly always) has been a hostile place to anything that isn't Steve/Danny and/or core four. It has been this way for three seasons, and it shows no signs of changing any time soon, and as harsh as it may seem, I see all of these various rants as nothing more than childish whining and pouting because they know their fanon ship will never be canon, and they have decided to hate everything else out of spite. This behavior has fragmented and destroyed the fandom as I knew it would. People seek out fandom for happiness and friendship not this constant negativity. For proof of my statements, all you have to do is look at the number of comments on the top three H50 communities (H50_TV, H50_Slash, and Steve/Danny_Slash). They have dropped drastically, and with few exceptions only the negative commentors remain.

The splintering of fandom is always sad. I mostly stay clear when I can. But it still leaks over.

OMG - coffee ice cream is like my #2 flavor!!!! You are WRONG not to love it!! What is wrong with you???

I do love it. But I can see how not everyone would!

Hi, Tkeyla : )

LOL!!! That's funny that coffee ice cream is your second favorite flavor. Alas, I just don't like the taste of coffee anything. I'm a tea drinker (hot or sweet) or hot chocolate fan instead.

Yes, I know. There must be something loose in my wiring somewhere to not enjoy coffee. *g

Take care!!! : )

But...what I don't understand is, if you've stopped reading all reviews, then what is it that's upsetting you?
Are 6 dogs too many?tkeylasunset on March 20th, 2013 02:28 am (UTC)
I'm no longer upset about any of it. that's why I've avoided the ugliness. But there have been posts on almost everyone's journal trying to make sense of the battles being waged. My post is really a white flag to say I'm not visiting those battlefields any longer!

Does that make sense?

I admit that there are characters I hate with a passion, but for me that makes me like the show better because mostly they are bad guys. They are characters that I love to hate. I admit I am a McDanno shipper, but I have no problem with the other ships in fandom. I like the occasional Steve/Cath/DAnny, or Danny/Kono or Danny/Chin. I think if the story is well written then it shouldn't matter what the pairing is, and people who are haters on other ships need to grow up. I will appologize because occasional in my reviews my dislike of certain characters comes through as does my love for McDanno. But I always try to state that I have no propblem with Steve/Cath as long as the writers can actually make it look like they have feelings for each other.

I wish more reviewers and people in fandom could just accept that not everyone likes 'mint chocolate chip' or 'cookie dough' and just move on.

I think we all have love/hate relationships with our favorite shows. That's part of being human.

I'm not going to bash anyone's ships or characters. Live and let live. That philosophy seems lost on so many people right now!

That's all I was trying to say. I'll be over here polishing off a pint of Ben & Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch if anyone needs me!!!

I love H5-0 and I love ice cream. I also stopped, as you know, doing my recaps. Not loving or hating Catherine, she is there and nothing I can do about it. I love roller derby & enjoyed the ep. I am however still hating Doris. The mom in me wants to smack the shit out of her for leaving her kids. The only thing I will say that you might not like is I feel that, much as I do like it, the Steve/Cath 'ship is taking too much of a forefront. I liked it better as background. But they will make such beautiful babies together, won't they? (ETA: I went thru all of this for so many years, as I have said on my LJ, in the SPN fandom. I just don't feel like ranting against the hate anymore. 8 years in SPN, and prior to that numerous years in SG1 and you get tired.)

I loved SG1 for years, but was ?lucky? enough to just un-invest at the finale of the next to last season rather than going through the "I can still see the show I love beneath this new character/plot point/weird relationship twist, GIVE IT BACK YOU BASTARDS" that, imo, fuels most fandom hate. Babylon 5, on the other hand? A 5th season made of rage, I tell you, towering rage and detailed death fantasies for the 'intruding' characters. *shame*

I remember the B5 S5 stuff. I remember somebody posting that when Lochley punched Garibaldi he should have slugged her back - they hated her with a passion.
kahuna_burgerkahuna_burger on March 20th, 2013 10:35 pm (UTC)
She was emminently hateable - and an entire episode of her blaming others for the unpredictable and completely failing to lead capped off with the Audience Surrogate character telling her (and us) that she's doing great just added that extra "shoved down your throat" feeling to the experience. *shudder with memories*

I would rather eat salad for desert than coffee ice cream. It tastes BAD to me. And yes that is a personal feeling, but it is not an imaginary one where I don't understand the truth that all ice cream is in some way good. In the same way as there are flavors which aren't just not my favorites but cause me negative enjoyment if a scoop ends up in my sunday, there are characters who belittle or abuse other characters I have grown fond of (and more importantly are never taken to task no matter how out of character it makes the rest of the cast) who actively reduce my enjoyment of a series.

To stretch the metaphor even further beyond the breaking point, if my favorite icecream place on the planet starts adding a complimentary scoop of coffee flavor to every third thing I order, it isn't as simple as saying "hey, enjoy the extra icecream!" or alternately, "well stop going there if you don't like it anymore!" It is frustrating to people to be able to see all the things that make them love something but not know when it's going to be interrupted by something they actively dislike. Frustrated people rant about it and try to warn others when it's an 'add a coffee scoop' day while they wait and hope that management will cut it out.

(Which is to say I am thankful for the negative reviews, since I watch most episodes later in the week OnDemand anyway, and like the heads up that a particular scene is likely to annoy me.)

Finally, while I totally understand being peeved by negativity/frustration in a fandom that you are basically 'it's all good' about, the very fact that there is a 'fandom' is because people are invested in the show. Uninvested people don't write fanfiction, or compile screen caps or discuss the latest ep in detail with you. But invested people sometimes have negative feelings as well as positive ones, and those are gonna be part of the overall experience.

Since we are going with the ice cream metaphors here, to me the problem is, I really like ice cream, I just prefer certain flavours. My problem comes in when the flavour I least prefer takes offence at not being eaten first and melts all over my shoes ;)
Anyway now I'm on diet, so I may have to cut down on my ice cream consumption and only eat my most favourite flavours

I concur with your assessment. :-)
