I found this surprising
I was wasting time on the internet, as one does when one is not otherwise engaged. And came on this tumblr post:

Which are the biggest ships in fandom?

The tumblr-owner/poster/whomever made a chart of the most popular "ships" on AO3. Steve/Danny came in 13th. I'm really surprised they ranked so high!

According to the chart, Kirk/McCoy is 22nd and Kirk/Spock is 23rd. But there doesn't seem quite right. I wonder if TOS and AOS were both counted. Because I would have expected Kirk/Spock to be in the top ten.

At any rate, I thought it was interesting. Not Earth shattering. Not even particularly important. But there it is.

I saw that over the weekend. I was surprised at how high Steve/Danny were as well.

Right? H50 gets almost no buzz outside of those who love it. But there they are at 13!

But then they are so cute, who can resist them?
Lizet Elainesimplyn2deep on August 12th, 2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
I think if they got more buzz they'd be higher on the list. I'm like confused why CBS doesn't promote them more...or as much as they promote their other shows that are doing much better.

That is pretty high, then again, whenever I go on AO3, I see nothing, but drabbles which has been a thing for many months now. Nothing wrong with drabbles, but I bet the sheer volume skews the numbers.

There is that! But still, for Kirk/Spock-McCoy to be so relatively low is super surprising to me.

Who knew?

If they are only counting AOS then it makes sense that Kirk/McCoy would be the larger of the two. If they are using both then their numbers are skewed because Kirk/McCoy are a bit taboo in TOS. (No idea why, but it is.)

However, that graph is only for AO3, It does not include the many stories that are not posted there in: LJ, IJ, DW, FFN, AFF, Magazines, Fanzines, Books (Because we both know most Star trek books are fanfic.)

Trust me when I say the reality is Kirk/Spock are probably at the top of the fan chart along with Draco/Harry, Snape/Harry, and several other slash pairings.

Kirk/McCoy are a bit taboo in TOS. (No idea why, but it is.

(Tangent alert!) I'm not surprised, Bones in TOS had a sort of paternal role with Kirk. He came off as noticably older (don't know actual character/actor ages) and was essentially outside the chain of command, being able to use his status as a doctor to 'pull rank' on the captain if needed.
Umai Hoshi: Grinfairyniamh on August 12th, 2013 10:33 pm (UTC)
Kirk is the baby of the trio. Spock is three years older than Kirk and McCoy is three years older than Spock. So the age gap isn't all that large. However i will state that when I took off my Kirk/Spock glasses and re-watched it as a fan with no pairing preferences... hoo boy. There are actually a lot of Kirk/McCoy moments and Spock/McCoy moments. (Kirk changing in the same room as McCoy, McCoy carefully wiping blood from Kirk's lip... Yup, I see it.) I may decide to dip into the taboo pool and write TOS Kirk/McCoy.

Those three men will always remain my OT3 (TOS only, I don't see the same chemistry in the AOS trinity.)

That's what I figured too. Since it's only AO3, it's not a perfect poll. None of my K/S stories are on AO3, not that I've written all that many. But when I first started writing Star Trek fics, there was no AO3.

It was still an interesting study in what's going on in fanfiction!
Emeraldawnwitchyemerald on August 12th, 2013 09:42 pm (UTC)
I think different sites would have different numbers too.

Also the first non slash was #25 I thought some pairing would break in higher

There was talk about it being so slash heavy. But the most popular pairings have always been slash. Women aren't given the greatest roles with the greatest potential for exciting or romantic fanfiction.

As for myself, I only write slash because the idea of two hot men is hot like fire. It doesn't matter how hot the women are, I'm not interested in writing them together. That's just my preference. Not right or wrong - just the way my brain works.
Emeraldawnwitchyemerald on August 12th, 2013 11:20 pm (UTC)
I guess it just surprises me because I have seen some anti slash reviews etc, on fanfiction dot com.

Just two men?!? You limit yourself so much!

I do. I really do. And I'm okay with it!
kahuna_burger: fanfickahuna_burger on August 12th, 2013 10:12 pm (UTC)
Agree with the prior comments on site mattering. For instance, on AO3, the majority of H50 fics are some flavor of McDanno. (Like, over 2/3 are tagged as Steve Mcgarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams, and if you eliminate those you still see a reasonable amount of pre-slash, threesomes with those two included and McDanno that wasn't given that specific tag.) But if you go to fanfic.net, even searching the h50 fics for Danny and Steve as the main characters, actual McDanno is a minority and a lot of authors feel the need to put "NOT SLASH!!!!" in their summaries.

Also, I'm not sure the question is supposed to be "biggest ships EVAH!?" or "ships that are currently the biggest". The two questions would require very different methodologies to answer.

However, I'll avoid putting on the "Statistics Geek Hat" and describing all the other methodological flaws, because the post accompanying the graphic pretty much admits to them.
;-)

The poster said This is only a good metric for the current state of what’s most common on AO3 in August 2013. I believe that's all it's meant to be.

Since ff.net doesn't use relationship tags, it's almost impossible to determine how many on there are slash. Especially since ff.net doesn't "officially" permit sex on its site.

Still, the fact that H50 ranks so much higher than Star Trek was what surprised me the very most!
J.the_physicist on August 12th, 2013 10:49 pm (UTC)
I think it's because it's AO3. That place only really picked up in recent years, otherwise the Harry Potter fics would be swamping the top set way more for one. And K/S would be bigger too. Things probably look different even if you look just at FF.net. But those fics aren't tagged in a way that you can easily search...

I think you are right. I don't post any of my Star Trek to AO3 because it didn't exist when I first started. All of my ST stories are on ff.net which, as you say, you can't search by relationship tag.

The world is a strange place!
The Huntress: Sentinel1huntress69 on August 13th, 2013 01:00 am (UTC)
If its only AO3 that could be why The Sentinel is so far down. I expected it to be in the Top 5 LOL.

Only AO3. I wish there was a way to compile stats from the major sites but that would be impossible.
Diego: mcdannodiek09 on August 13th, 2013 12:05 am (UTC)
Lol. I'm quite amazed by the McShep pairing. Sixth place. lol.

And wow #13 place for McDanno.
