A Post in Which I Ramble and You'll No Doubt Become Bored and Change the Channel
Heeeyyyy.... how have you been? Are you enjoying this lovely change of season? I am!

So maybe you noticed I've been among the missing? It's okay if you didn't - as much as I'd like to believe otherwise, I do know I'm not the center of the universe. Well, except to our dogs. At any rate, I thought I'd post about what's up in the life of Tkeyla and why I've been AWOL.

As you may or may not recall (and again I understand if you don't remember every detail of my going-ons) in August my sister in Maryland broke her shoulder. I spent two weeks at her house, helping her do those things which require the use of your right hand - like getting dressed and eating. I got home on Saturday and started class on Monday. I feel like I've been playing catch up ever since!

And school has been kicking my butt since the first day. I should have graduated in May 2014 but I screwed up my schedule. Some of the required classes for my major - Simulation and Game Design - are only offered in the spring semester. This meant I couldn't finish my degree and graduate until this coming May. Since I had a fall semester to fill with classes other than SGD, I made the genius decision to take Graphic Arts classes. I am creative but very un-artistic. I knew that taking graphic arts classes would benefit my possible future in game design. I grossly underestimated how all-consuming these classes would be!!!

If you are a Graphic Arts major, your first semester you are expected to take Computer Graphics, Graphic Design, Typography, and Drawing. Since I'm not getting a degree in GA, I'm only taking Computer Graphics and Graphic Design. They are both proving to be very helpful but OMG they have taken over my life!!!! It feels like I spend all of my free time trying to keep up with the assignments. If I was one of those students who was taking typography and drawing as well, I'd never get any sleep!!!!

Computer Graphics teaches and utilizes Adobe Illustrator. It's a great program and once I understood the basics, I wasn't quite so intimidated by it. But I'm not great at using it. And my instructor is... well, he's not my biggest fan. Last week our assignment was to make a poster in the Hatch Show Poster style. I worked really hard on mine and asked him to take a look. He said he was "indifferent to it." Do you know how unhelpful that is??? So I started from scratch. I didn't show him my second poster. I am having it printed to turn it in on Monday so I'll be done with it. If he's indifferent to it, that's just too bad. (If you want to see it, it's here on Photobucket. If you're indifferent to it, you don't need to tell me, 'kay? I'm hoping it will load for you. It takes forever on my computer for some reason.)

My graphic design class is much less stressful although nearly as time consuming. I'm not very good at rendering the work but my instructor is encouraging, helpful, and approving. If she doesn't think something works, she tells me why. That is helpful.

I'm in class Monday through Thursday, 9 to 12ish, some days a little later if I'm behind. On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, I work in the tutoring center 1:00 to 6:00. On Fridays, I work 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. I don't work Wednesday so I usually come home from class and fall exhausted into bed. On the other days, I'm usually ready for bed by 9 p.m. Which goes a long way to explain why I haven't written a single word in what feels like years! In fact, the last time I posted to AO3 was September 9. It feels like a part of me is missing!!! October 13 and 14 were fall break from school. I still couldn't write! I think my muses are about to emerge from hibernation - at least I hope so!

Between the stress and the always-tired thing, I came down with a cold which turned into Bronchitis. I missed two days of work and two days of class, which naturally didn't help the feeling that I was already behind in all my assignments. After feeling like I was on death's door for two weeks, I finally admitted defeat and went to the doctor on October 1. He diagnosed the bronchitis and prescribed antibiotics and prednisone. Prednisone is a miraculous medication but Oh My GOD there was not enough food in the entire world!!! I ate and ate and ate. Generally, I am a grazer - eating small amounts throughout the day. Not with prednisone! I couldn't go half an hour before I needed something else to eat. It was, frankly, a little disgusting! I'm finally not starving all the time, which is a relief.

In other news, I had applied to an MFA in Creative Writing program and was rejected. It wasn't pretty when I got the letter. I had a come-apart. I'm still not happy I didn't get in but I figure it's their loss, right? Yeah, let's go with that!

There have been other and various bumps in the road that are a part of life - I'll spare you the boring details. (Okay, I admit this entire post may have been "the boring parts" but I'll leave you to decide that!)

Tell me how you have been! I've missed you and our cozy chats.

Your classes sound hard to me, so good for you for getting out there to learn something new :)

And did the MFA program give you a reason for the rejection? You can always apply again right?
