Snowflake Challenge 2015: Day Five

Day 5 In your own space, talk about your fannish origin story. How did you come to fandom, why did you choose your fannish name, do you have more than one secret identity? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

First of all, I want to direct your attention to my brand new icon!! I posted as part of Snowflake Challenge that I would love a Dancing Groot icon and someone I didn't know posted this one in the comments for me. Is this awesome or what???

My fannish origin story is one from the dark ages - the pre-internet days. I fell into it by accident when a friend mentioned she was putting together a Star Trek zine. I'd never heard of such a thing but I was intrigued. It was wonderful and scary and incredibly awesome!

Fast forward to the advent of the inter-tubes (thank you Al Gore) and I finally decided to brave this electronic world and post my stories. Like many of us, I'd always written stories in my head. It took me a long time to work up the courage to share them with the larger world.

When I was deciding on a pen name, I was solely in the Star Trek TOS fandom. I wanted a name that sounded vaguely Vulcan but wasn't impossible to remember. If a word doesn't make sense to me, I won't ever remember it. Some people have cool, weird fannish names but I can never locate them again after I've admired their pseudonym. Being a fan of the Eagles inspired me to go with Tkeyla Sunset. I would have used Tkeyla Sunrise but I was afraid they'd sue me (yeah, like they'd notice.)

Ironically, I can't drink tequila because it makes me sad - "the world would be better off without me" sad. Plus, I have a hard time remembering how to spell the real version of tequila. So I spelled it phonetically.

I only post under Tkeyla. I've tried creating other pseudonyms but then I forget the email for it or the password for it and it all falls apart. If I'm not willing to post something as Tkeyla, I probably shouldn't post it at all.

I'm really fond of my pen name and can't imagine being anyone else in fandom.

The icon is adorable. :) I am glad someone made it for you.

I did not include my pre-net days. Those creations will stay buried forever. (Including my editorial stint in comics/manga.) Different name then (not my real name) and she was put to rest many years ago. (I WIN! \o/)

The first time I saw your name... I stared at it for 10 minutes trying to figure out what it was supposed to be. It totally eluded me, until my daughter asked me why I was looking up booze. Then the light wen off. *hits head* Sometimes the lights go off in my brain. I think it tries to scare me, then it remembers I am not afraid of the dark. XD

you should thank Khan and Cerf for the net, they invented it, not Gore.

OMG - that's so funny about my pen name. I thought I had spelled it so it would be clear. But what we think works really well can stump someone else entirely!

I have deeply buried creations too. I have made arrangements to have them burned if I should die suddenly. Not porn like some people. Drivel, pure drivel is my dark secret.

I'm sorry - unless you mean Khaaaannnn I don't know who that is. And I have no idea who Cerf is although I am very grateful to them all for inventing the inter-webs!!

It's all about the zines. :-D

And I've always thought you had one of the best lj names ever!

Right? I wonder sometimes if I still have those zines but then I decide it's not worth the trouble of looking through 1,000 years of accumulated junk in the garage.

I love my pen name. I'm glad you like it as well!!!

And as fan of Dante, I admire your pen name too!!
