More about school
Monday and Wednesdays are MATH days. God help me!

We had a quiz on (f-ing) polynomials on Wednesday, which we got back today. I made an 82!!! Not to the standards of the 92 I got on the first one but I'll take it. Maybe the 82 will stop my math nightmares. Yes, I do have bad dreams about factoring polynomials. Have I mentioned that I HATE math???

My "neighbor" in class made another 72. I'm sorry for his pain but it makes me feel a lot better. He keeps telling me he understands it but apparently not so much.

These were just quizzes. Our first real test is next Wednesday. OMG. Surely I'll be able to sleep between now and then.

Tomorrow is Creative Writing class. We had to read "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway. I am a lover of Hemingway even though he is a misogynist. I said that to one of the guys who is in my math and my Creative Writing class. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what it means. I think. Oh well.

But then who am I to say that? I didn't know the story was about abortion until I googled it. I know I've read it before. But I don't remember it being about that particular subject. Because it's never stated. I'm usually pretty good at "getting" a story but I missed the boat on that one.

We also had a quiz on punctuation for Creative Writing. I contend that the instructor has the wrong answer for one of the questions so I only scored a 90. I refuse to take it again since I don't think she has the right answer as a choice. For anyone interested, here is the question I am contesting:

a. "How could she keep saying, "I told you so.""?
b. "How could she keep saying I told you so?"
c. "How could she keep saying, 'I told you so'"?
d. "How could she keep saying, 'I told you so."?

My instruction said C is the correct answer. I don't see it. I asked one of my best friends who has a PhD in English and until recently was Dean of Arts and Sciences where we both formerly worked. She said she didn't think any of them were correct. AND because she is an advocate of getting people to write said that it doesn't really matter that much. Those kind of rules prevent people from writing at all!

I tend to agree. But I can't figure out why you would ever put the question mark outside of the quotation marks. Yes, I do spend WAY too much time thinking about these things!

So I am celebrating my 82 when I thought I made a 62. And perseverating about punctuation quizzes.

How was your day??

I just have to say that "Hills Like White Elephants" is one of my most favourite stories ever. We had to read it last year in my short stories class for uni and it was fantastic. :D He's so good at not stating something that when you realize what it's about you're like "really?!".

Hope your day is going well!

I love Hemingway!! Even though his treatment of women sometimes gets in my way.

He does avoid the topic in a masterful way!!!

I don't think any of them are correct either! Go you on the math - it was always my failing :)

Right? Inside the quotation mark!!!

Math - bane of my existence. But I have to get through it. Next semester I have to take Mechanical Physics. Fortunately I have a friend who majored in Physics. He's going to have to help me. Or, you know, I'll hurt him.

That question mark needs to get back inside the quote! That is all.

Right?? That's all I'm saying. I'll make her explain it tomorrow in class!

Hooray for your math score! Impressive!

The correct answer is "How could she keep saying 'I told you so.'?" In case you wanted my 2 cents. :D

That is what I am saying!! Inside the quotation mark!

I will update today after class!

Love your icon. Love all your icons!!! (Still mourning the early demise of Moonlight!)

I'm with you on the punctuation. I'd be interested in hearing her reasoning behind it. I hope that you will post it. I totally agree with your PhD friend. Grammar czars do prevent people from writing because they are afraid of making those little mistakes.

*looks at your icon* PUPPY! Your dog is so cute!!!

Yes grammar czars do take the joy away. I can't understand why the question mark is outside the quotation mark!!

I'll update after class today.

Thank you for the kind words concerning my puppy!! She's my little baby. Cutest dog in the world if you ask me!
