How Steve McGarrett is Ruining My Life

For the most part, I’m a fairly normal human being. Until recently, I had a job. Now I’m going back to school. I’m still a contributing member of society. At least on the outside. On the inside…well. It’s practically all Steve McGarrett all the time.

Maybe it isn’t that bad. But he does take up a lot more of my thoughts that can be considered healthy? Normal? IDEK? And I want to state up front that I think way too much about Steve McGarrett. I’m not a stalker-type who is going to Hawaii and hope to run into the actors at various locations. I’m not fascinated by Alex O’Loughlin. I do know the difference.

It’s Lt. Commander Steve McGarrett who takes up the space in my head. Even as I write this, I’ll admit I’m a little embarrassed by being so fascinated by a fictional character. But I take comfort in knowing I’m not alone. We are having a Challenge based on the show he’s in so it’s not just me!

I’ve always had a “thing” for men in uniform. I’d guess the majority of women do. And, well, few people fill out a uniform quite like Steve McGarrett does. I also have a fascination for men who can fly planes and/or helicopters. I have a friend who did it for the Air Force and if I ask him enough times, he’ll finally tell me about what it was like to fly one. But he doesn’t understand my interest in it. It’s impossible to explain – but a man who can fly a plane? Oh wow.

After I discovered the incredibleness that is Steve McGarrett, I bought the DVDs of Moonlight. They were okay. But I’m not that fond of Beth. I see no chemistry there. I still haven’t watch all of them. Because Steve McGarrett’s not in the show. It’s really not about the actor that plays him. It’s about the character and all that he is.

What this comes down to is that I spend way more time than can be considered healthy either reading or writing fan fiction that is about Steve. With Danno. Because I can’t imagine Steve without his Danno. Anymore than I can imagine Jim Kirk without his Spock.

I suspect that when the new Star Trek movie comes out (finally) next May, Jim Kirk will regain his position as my #1 fictional… well, object of my fictional affection? But until then, Steve McGarrett will take up more of my time than he should be allowed to do. I don’t suppose he’s ruining my life as much as taking up a lot of time in it. And since he isn’t coming to my house to do the laundry, I need to stop thinking so much about him and more about separating the whites from the darks!

I would separate Steve's whites from his darks any time.

But seriously, he fascinates me because he's alone. I identify with that. Except, he has managed to cope with it by building an Ohana.

And he does fill out that uniform quite nicely. Yes, sir.

I'd separate Steve from his whites any time!!! (Oh, that's not what you said, is it? ;-)

He is alone. He had built his Ohana, a lesson we can all learn, I think.

His uniform should be classified as a weapon, the way he wears it.

Thank you for the lovely reply!!

Yep, ruining my life. And I'm surprisingly okay with it.

Cannot wait for the next Star Trek movie!!!

Hehe, I think it's normal, you definitely aren't alone. Well, I don't know anything about this one character, because I don't know that TV show, but... Spock?

Yeah... ♥♥♥

I've always wanted to be Spock. Well, I'm a physicist now, and I guess that's as close as I'll get to being a Vulcan on a starship, huh? XD

Did think of flying for a while, but I couldn't get into the air squadron I wanted, so that was that and now it's too late as I can no longer fulfil the entry requirements. Such is life.

I do go through times when I can't stop thinking about different characters, it isn't always Spock, but he's the one I come back to time and again when the other obsessions wear off. Not Nimoy, not Quinto... Spock.

Doesn't match my avatars? Pfffft... if I'm Spock, then I love Kirk. My avatars make perfect sense to me!

And no.

I'm not Sheldon.

Spock is ♥. And so is his Jim!! Either one of them.

I think it's fabulous that you are a physicist because of Spock!! I would have become an astronaut because of Jim if women had been allowed to be astronauts when I was younger. And I didn't have horrible vertigo. And I was smart enough to get into the training. Well... anyway. You must get the idea, right? :-)

You avatar is ALWAYS appropriate. That smile. Those eyes!! OMG. Why can't the movie come out this summer???? Shakes metaphorical fist at JJAbrahms.
J.the_physicist on April 19th, 2012 07:26 pm (UTC)
hehe, actually i'm extremely glad it's not out this summer as then i wouldn't be able to see it in the cinema properly. we weren't able to get tickets for imax for ST XI, but i want to go to watch ST XII in imax with my partner and my friends on the first day it's out if possible. i'm going to be away all of the summer working in Korea though, so then i wouldn't get the chance to see it properly if it was this summer. i was so happy when it was delayed XD .

and i couldn't be an astronaut because i have the wrong passport ;) . it's all political on which nationalities the astronauts can be, hehe.

with Jim, i think i only really liked him after I started shipping Kirk with Spock... cause then i learnt to see what Spock sees in him ;) .

I'm a Steve gal rather than an Alex gal. I've tried watching Alex in other things, and while I can drool with the best of them, it's Steve that really has me.

On the other hand, I'll watch Karl Urban in anything, no matter what and still find him hot, that's more Karl than Bones :)

I'm so glad it's not just me!! That's exactly how I feel about Steve vs. Alex!!!

I went to see RED because Karl Urban was in it. I haven't seen any of his other movies though. I don't do vampires so "Priest" was out. (That's what it was called, right?) But man is he hot!!!

siluria: Men_Karl_PS2siluria on April 18th, 2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
Yep, Priest, Karl was about the only believable character in it :) It was Bourne Supremacy was what made me fall in love with Karl, I was a bit too ingrained in the Aragorn camp to notice Eomer, but it was Bourne? Who's Bourne? when Karl's character first appeared.

I think we all have characters who do this to us. I have to say I'm way crazy about AOL completely, and it's usually the guy who does it for me because I'm a sucker for a pretty face. But some characters you love especially hard and Steve is one of those, no matter how 'perfect' he seems to be. I love the goofiness he seems to have, the way he loves and shows it, and OF COURSE HE'S HOT. I do tend to think though, that no one else could be him like AOL has managed. Mmm.

Also, big Karl love here too. ;-)

I'm glad it's not just me. I mean, I know other people do it too. But sometimes it feels weird to be so fascinated by a fictional character!

And you are right - no one could be Steve McGarrett but AOL!! He brings the perfect mix of bad-assery and goofiness. Who else could pull it off?

Big Karl love all the way. Wish Karl would guest on H50. How awesome would that be???

That would be so awesome!

Incidentally, I'm so proud of Karl; he's one of my country's greatest exports, and he still lives here. I'm so tempted to stalk him, but I'm way too shy. He sold his house here in Auckland recently and it was on 'net all about it; I was so tempted to go to the auction - if it had been a weekend, I might have, but luckily (for him and me too, probably!) it was a work day and I couldn't really justify taking the day off.
