Review of Ka Iwi Kapu (Halloween Episode)

Review of Ka Iwi Kapu (Halloween Episode) for Team SEALs on Dreamwidth. Hundreds of thanks to rocsfan for the screen caps!!! You totally rock the most!!

I decided to review this episode because it is probably my least favorite episode. There are lots of episodes I love and rewatch for the smiles. This is one that bothers me on more levels than I feel really comfortable admitting. So here I am – admitting it. I never want to admit that something I love has flaws because it makes me feel disloyal. But we all know that Hawaii 5-0, while great fun to watch, is hardly without its flaws. The episode Ka Iwi Kapu is a good example of those things that make H50 less than perfect.

It starts with a cliché. Seriously, revisiting Blair Witch Project? I never saw that movie because I can’t watch horror movies. I suppose it is a pretty good way to begin a Halloween episode even if it does feel a little like it’s the easy way out.

1blair witch

Naturally, it doesn’t take long for these two college students to end up dead. It’s creepy and just scary enough to make you wonder what’s coming next.

Sadly what comes next in The Show is Danny taking Gracie trick-or-treating in his no-tell motel.

2trick or treat

I don’t buy for a minute that Danny would take Grace around the motel. He would have taken her around Rachel’s neighborhood. Or to Steve’s neighborhood. NOT to the hotel which even he admits is creepy. And then he yells at Creepy Guy in his undershirt that he does have candy. If he had given Grace candy, would you have let her eat it? I sure wouldn’t. Then Danny threatens Creepy Guy because he gives Grace airline liquor bottles. Could Danny have been more of a jerk? Wait – he becomes even more a jerk as the episode progresses, as hard as it to believe! (Why did Scott Caan allow Danny to be written like this? Don’t the actors have any say over how their characters are written? This episode was inhabited by anti-Danny! I just don’t understand. But how hot does Danny look in that screen cap? Adorable!)

Grace’s unfortunate trick-or-treating is cut short by a phone call from Steve (I guess?). We go back to the heiau where Blair Witch guy and his girlfriend were killed. Where we end up with more anti-Danny. Why did he act like such a jerk at the heiau? His attitude made me so angry that I wrote my only episode tag fic to fix him. How dare he disrespect their traditions? Steve is right – how does he expect the HPD to have any respect for him when he doesn’t respect their ways??

I’m not even religious but the scene at the heiau makes me want to slap Danny.

3spirits now or later

His mockery and sheer ass-holeness is beyond belief. I was glad his windshield was broken. And how awful is that? That I wanted to take my anger out on the Camaro too?

Steve calls him out on his horrible attitude and Danny says he believes what he can see in front of his face. Then why did Danny give Kono a St. Michael’s medal at her “graduation”? And why did Danny make the sign of the cross right before Steve entered the MMA fight? Show, please decide. Danny believes in these things or he doesn’t. And please don’t make me want to slap him ever again!

4do not wow me“Do not wow me.”

No, Steve, do please wow him. He so deserves it!

Oh right. Before this happens, Kono accidentally tells them that Lori had to change because she was at a Halloween party. Lori’s refusal to reveal what costume she was wearing only made me wonder more too.

5slutty wonder woman

Was it slutty Wonder Woman? Sure, you can have a private life but it’d be easier for all of us if you’d just tell us what costume you were wearing.

When this episode first aired, some fans had a problem with Lori telling “Danno” to stop it. They said she had no right to call him that. Ordinarily I’d agree except that he was being annoying so she used his nickname to get him to shut up about it already. Score one for the women!

Steve and Danny return to HQ and visit Max, or Keanu as Danny called him.

6 keanu
I loved the fact that Max was dressed like the Matrix dude. (The Matrix is another movie I’ve never seen. Man, it’s a wonder I understand any modern cultural references at all!) And Max’s office!! Halloween central. I’d love to be Max’s friend, you know, if he existed! (We could talk about Star Trek! Awesome.)

Max explains what happened to the girl and her boyfriend. They’re dead. I can’t remember how they died. That’s pretty sad on my part, isn’t it? He also tells them that there was a fingerprint on her glasses. The fingerprint belongs to Greg Stratham who is also dead. Now that’s pretty cool!

Steve and Lori go to the mental hospital to talk to Greg Stratham’s girlfriend who supposedly killed him, if he’s really dead. They wanted to see if she was really insane. Yeah, pretty sure she is. Even before Lori confirms it.

7lori mental hos

The poor woman. Who can blame her for killing her boyfriend when he was abusive to her?

Meanwhile, Danny is at their apartment, telling the landlady she’ll have to reduce the rent. Again with the awful behavior? Steve calls him down for that too but he is utterly unrepentant!

Here is a picture of the nice landlady. I can’t tell you why but every time I see her, I feel all warm inside. Was she in a lot of Disney movies? IDEK:

8utilities included

We go back to the heiau and get to see Kono talking to the Holy Man. I love this scene!! He’s so cool. And they are so great together. He needs to come back for more episodes!! (I'm sure he has an actual title but I can't remember what it is. I'm sorry, Holy Man.)

9kono priest

And who else is there but Gabby? Danny tries to fix his hair but Steve says it doesn’t help. (That’s only because Steve is jealous and doesn’t want Danny talking to her!) And before we go any further into the episode, let’s take moment to appreciate how incredibly delicious Steve looks in this blue shirt:

11steve blue shirt

OMG!!! Seriously? Only wear this color, okay? Or this one:

open the door
Either one!

Sorry. That’s not the point, is it? Danny tries to get Steve to go shoot someone but Steve says he’s good right where he is.

Chin announces that’s Danny’s window is broken – “no braddah, the other one.” This is when they decide to track Freddie Krueger – more movies I’ve never seen.

13it wasnt him

And I know it’s wrong, but he looked inexplicably hot to me in this scene. OMG. That is wrong on so many levels!!! But he didn’t kill those college students. He did break Danny’s windows for which I award him a gold star.

They had dug up that empty casket that did not contain Greg Stratham and figured out that the Funeral Director and the Charge Nurse were in cahoots. They try the funeral home (I think that’s where they go) where Steve tells them to split up.

Okay. Hold on. You are looking for a murderer, one who is cutting up dead bodies to sell their ligaments on the black market. It’s late and it’s dark. And you send your team off by themselves?? NO. Just no.

Lori is assigned the basement where she’s clobbered on the head. I’m not Lori fan but no way should Steve have split up the team OR sent Lori to the basement alone. And when the lights didn’t work, Lori should have hightailed it out of there. And why weren’t they wearing their earpieces? Steve and Danny had them on in the heiau when they were searching for homeless Freddie Krueger. Why didn’t the four of them have them on while searching for really creepy Funeral Director guy? (To say the writing of this episode was problematic and/or inconsistent would be something of any understatement.)

After Lori recovers from her head-smashing, they leave in their cars. But apparently they don’t know where they are going until Kono tells them what she found out about Charge Nurse – the one that signed out all the bodies and had his debts paid off not so long ago.

So off they go to the Charge Nurse’s secret hideaway. (I do give kudos to Danny for knowing the property Charge Nurse had purchased was isolated and wouldn’t draw any attention to their activities. Gold star for knowing the local area!) Except they left Kono at HQ. I know someone needs to tell them the clues and where to go but why couldn’t it have been Lori? Really?

They find Charge Nurse’s very creepy hideout and find Creepy Nurse whom we hadn’t met up until then. He ends up burning himself alive. Oh God. One of my worst nightmares. I could barely watch that scene. But the Team is safe. And the mysteries are wrapped up.

The last scene is of the Team helping Danny move into the new apartment. Which they have to help him move right back out of because it’s apparently haunted by Ms Keoko. Which  really is what Danny deserves. Because he was such a jerk in this episode! But Steve did look hot in that blue shirt!!! (Not so much in the final scene with the yellow shirt. But he was wearing jeans and flip flops!!!)

Again, I know there are flaws in The Show. But this episode feels like very little else but flaws. And I’m sorry, Show. I hate disliking you. But really, I think this time, you have no one to blame but yourself.

my only comment for this entire entry is to say that I liked Steve in the yellow shirt at the end.

oh and I agree with pretty much everything else you said.

I didn't care for the yellow shirt but the blue one made up for it. And I feel so guilty for being mad at the Show! But I can't help it!

Thanks for the reassurance that it's not just me!!

I never want to admit that something I love has flaws because it makes me feel disloyal.

For me it makes me feel very loyal since I can see the flaws with a show that I love so much. I hate seeing the flaws :-(

LOL @ the comments of not having seen the movies since I'm with your there! Even though I haven't seen them I know about them. As far as horror movies go not a fan of them so usually will stay away from them. Now Star Trek.....that's a different story but I will admit I've never seen the latest movie.

Steve in blue is very nice, very, very nice!

Great review!

Oh girlfriend. I recommend you see the Star Trek movie. Two words - Chris Pine. OMG! I lust after him in ways that I dare not admit. (The movie itself barely makes sense but I'm strangely okay with that.)

thank you for the kind words about the review!! It was fun, as much as I don't like that episode!

Thanks again!!

It's on my list of movies to see just wish there was more time in the day to get everything done!

You're welcome!

Excellent review! I really enjoyed reading this!

This episode was inhabited by anti-Danny!
Perfect was to explain it. He acted like such a jerk in this one, and I didn't like it, either. It's almost like he was trying to be as rude and annoying as possible.

I’d love to be Max’s friend, you know, if he existed! (We could talk about Star Trek! Awesome.)
Me, too! We would have a good time.

let’s take moment to appreciate how incredibly delicious Steve looks in this blue shirt:
We should take time to do this every day. He does look so wonderful in blue!

Steve is jealous of Gabby for sure! Oh, and I haven't seen The Matrix either, and I thought I was the only person in the country who hadn't. :)

Anti-Danny. It's the only possible explanation!! I know your heart must have been broken by the lack of Danny-love for this episode!!

Max would be a fun friend, wouldn't he??

Yes, Steve in blue is fine!! (Steve out of blue is also very very fine!!!)

Yay for the non-Matrix club! I don't have anything against it. I've just never been interested enough to watch it.

Thanks again for the screen caps!!! You do rock!
